LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL: OWEGO DIEDRICH RALLIES TO FINISH OWEGO 12U TOURNEY POOL PLAY AT 4-0 (2022-07-14)

OWEGO — Owego Diedrich completed “B” division pool play at the Owego Little League 12U Tournament at Hyde Park here Wednesday evening, rallying from an early 5-1 deficit to defeat Maine-Endwell Davis, 17-6.

The comeback started in the top of the fourth inning following back-to-back errors by M-E. With his team down, 5-2, Jeremiah Wheeler’s RBI double plated an Owego run. Eric Schrader delivered a three-run double to put the team ahead by a run and Caden Morrow made it 7-5 with an RBI single.

The flood gates opened in the fifth. A Brenden Whigham single, Nolan Card double and Ryan Diedrich’s RBI ground out kicked off the scoring barrage.

Ben Harvey followed with a run-scoring triple and Camden Thole added an RBI single to double up the score at 10-5. Wheeler and Schrader tacked on singles, then Dylan Gregory smacked a two-run single.

Morrow’s RBI double, Beckett Tirinato’s two-run triple, and RBI doubles by Whigham and Card closed out the Diedrich squad’s scoring at 17-5.

Owego’s initial run of the night came in the first inning following a walk, single and two consecutive hit batters, the latter of which pushed Tirinato across the plate.

Trailing, 5-1, Owego picked up its second run of the evening when Morrow launched a 220-foot home run over the center field fence.

Owego cranked out 16 hits with Whigham going 4-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, and Morrow going 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI.

Wheeler went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI; Card was 2-for-3 with a run and RBI; and Schrader went 1-for-2 with two runs and three RBI.

Gregory contributed a hit, run and RBI; Tirinato had a hit, two runs and two RBI; Diedrich added a run and two RBI; Harvey had a hit, run and RBI; Thole had a hit, two runs and an RBI; and Mason Henderson tacked on a run.

SATURDAY
Owego 13, Vestal Burdick 2
Fresh off a 10-run win over another Vestal team Friday, Owego rode a combined no-hitter by Diedrich, Harvey and Gregory to another big victory.

Owego never trailed, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first. Gregory got it started, scoring after being hit by a pitch and advancing on a Morrow double and Tirinato RBI single. Tirinato and Diedrich made it 4-0, tallying on an error in right field.

Ahead, 4-2, Owego added five in the fourth and four in the fifth.

Thole and Gregory sandwiched base hits between errors off the bats of Henderson and Morrow with Gregory plating two runs. Whigham’s two-run double made it 8-6 and Diedrich’s double gave Owego a 9-2 cushion.

Owego scored its final four runs with two down on a Henderson single, Thole walk, Gregory RBI single, Morrow RBI single and Tirinato’s two-run double.

At the dish, Gregory went 2-for-3 with three hits and three runs; Morrow was 2-for-3 with three runs and one RBI; and Tirinato was 2-for-4 with a run and four RBI.

Whigham had a hit, run and two RBI; Diedrich added a hit, run and RBI; Henderson and Thole each had a hit and two runs; and Card had one hit.

SUNDAY
Owego 4, UE Hamilton-Jones 2
Owego trailed 1-0 and 2-1, but tied things up in the third and went ahead to stay in the fourth.

Whigham doubled then, following an out, Diedrich smacked an RBI single to push the game-winning run across. Harvey followed with an RBI double.

Diedrich went 2-for-2 with a run and RBI; and Harvey was 1-for-2 with two RBI.

Gregory, Whigham and Card each had a hit and a run; Morrow had a hit and an RBI; and Tirinato added a hit.

Henderson and Tirinato scattered four hits and six walks while fanning six batters.

Bracket play begins Saturday.
