OWEGO — Lauren Gilbert is prepared to wait her turn, if necessary, to help the Keuka College softball team. Hopefully, it won’t be long.

The Owego senior pitcher signed a congratulatory certificate from the high school Wednesday for joining the Wolves’ program.

“I chose it because of the beautiful campus and amazing opportunities I’ll be able to have through my major,” Gilbert said. “I’m majoring in communications with hopes of going into journalism.”

She feels that having the opportunity to play against larger schools in high school will be a plus at the collegiate level.

“Being from a smaller town and playing those bigger AA schools I think will help me when going into college,” she said. “It shows that it doesn’t matter about you and your team’s abilities. It’s all about the mindset going forward. I also bring a great attitude.”

Gilbert, whose two-run home run was key in knocking off top-seeded and defending champion Susquehanna Valley in the Section IV Class B semifinals, doesn’t expect to dominate the college game right off the bat.

“The area I need to improve on is that I’m not going to be amazing right away,” Gilbert said. “Good things take time.”

She led the Indians to the sectional championship game where they fell to Chenango Valley in extra innings.

Keuka went 4-24 this past season, but on a positive note, the Wolves closed out the season with back-to-back victories.
