NEW YORK STATE BOYS GOLF: SVEC’S BANKS CARDS 80 AT CHAMPIONSHIPS (2022-06-05)

ELMIRA — SVEC’s Jacob Banks posted a solid round in his debut at the NYSPHSAA Boys Golf Championships here Sunday.

The junior shot 80 on the par-72 Mark Twain Golf Course, putting him in a six-way tie for 48th place in the field of 99 golfers.

“Overall, I played well,” Banks said of his round. “Just a couple of mistakes here and there led to some bigger numbers, but it was solid.”

The junior scored a birdie on the par-5 third hole, the third longest hole on the course — and he accomplished it hitting out of the bunker.

Jacobs’ only real struggle came on No. 18, where a triple bogey left him with a 41 halfway through the round. He was able to turn a delay in play at the turn into a 39 on the front nine.

“We had an hour between them, so I had a little bit of time to not think about it, so I just kind of cleared my mind, walking around and kind of just forgot about it.”

SVEC co-coach Kevin Jester said he thought Banks would have a solid round.

“He only made one mistake, on 18,” he said. “Other than that, he played very consistent and he had a nice birdie. He played a good front nine.

“His goal was to be around 80. He seems to set his goals and he hits them. His dad said he wanted to shoot 80. He played his game, which is very steady. He knows his game. He knows where not to miss and that’s what he did today. He should be proud.”

Banks bested his playing partners, Vincent Falagiatano from Section III and Carter Sica from Section II, by four strokes apiece.

He will have an early start time in Monday’s final round, teeing off on No. 1 at 7:30 a.m. in a threesome with Jack Estrella from Section VIII and Jason Starkweather of Section V.
