IAC SOFTBALL: WAVERLY ENDS CANDOR WIN STREAK (2022-05-14)

Tioga County Sports Report
CANDOR — Bella Romano’s fourth inning grand slam highlighted a 13-hit attack as Waverly ended Candor’s five-game win streak, 13-7, in IAC softball action here Friday.

In a battle of two .500 teams looking to bolster their records for the postseason run, the Wolverines took advantage of four extra-base hits and a half-dozen errors to improve to 8-7 while Candor slipped to 6-7.

Back-to-back singles by Natalie and Michaela Lauper, followed by an error off the bat of Lourden Benjamin set the stage-for-Romano’s blast. She connected on the second pitch, sending it over the head and just out of reach of left fielder Isabella Makie to give the Wolverines a 9-3 advantage.

Waverly built a 12-3 cushion in the sixth, Candor got four runs back in the home half of the inning, then Michaela Lauper struck out the side to secure the win, giving her 17 Ks on the day. She scattered seven hits and walked four batters.

Jill Holmes went 2-for-3 with a triple, double, two runs and three RBI. Anna Greeno was 2-for-4 with one RBI and Addie Aman went 1-for-3 with a double and three runs.

Kristi White was 1-for-2 with a run, Sierra Schweiger scored once and Makie added a hit.

The Holmes triple in the first inning made it a 1-1 game as it scored Aman, then Holmes tallied on a two-out passed ball for a 2-1 lead.

Aman, who reached on an error in her first plate appearance, did likewise in her second trip to the plate. She moved to second on the miscue, stole third and scored on a Holmes single.

The sixth inning brought an error off the bat of Schweiger, then Michaela Lauper fanned the next two batters. Candor responded with a base on balls by Kristi White, followed by an RBI double from Aman. Next up was Holmes, who belted a two-run double. Shelby Swartz worked a walk, then Greeno singled Holmes home for the Indians’ final run.

Michaela Lauper had three hits and three runs, and Ennis added three runs for Waverly. Romano had two hits, two runs and five RBI; and Belles added two hits, a run and two RBI.

The Indians' recent win streak qualified them for sectional play (teams must win 40 percent of all games).
