OWEGO — The Tioga County Sportsmen’s Association is offering a Youth Open House Sunday.
A longtime club member and former president, James “Tonto” Taylor, who passed away last November was an avid supporter of gun safety and youth shooting sports, and ensuring the two coincided with one another.
Taylor focused on promoting opportunities for younger people to gain expertise in firearm handling — with and emphasis on safety, recreation and friendly competition.
His family and friends have made it possible for the club to continue his wishes through their donations.
In Taylor’s honor, the club is holding the open house, which is designed for the youth of TCSA’s families, friends and acquaintances.
Anyone age 12 through 17 who might have an interest in learning about pistols, rifles, shotguns and archery are invited to attend the open house Sunday, beginning at 10 a.m. (May 22 rain date). The event will run till everyone has seen what they came for.
Kids, grandkids, nieces, nephews, cousins, the neighbor’s kid and the kids of your friends and acquaintances are all invited to attend.
If they show an interest, bring them by for a day of demonstrations and to try out what TCSA has to offer. The open house is just the beginning. The club hopes to encourage youth to engage in many future shooting activities.
The club will provide instructors, firearms, ammunition, targets, and a lunch of kid favorites such as pizza, hotdogs, burgers, fries and drinks.
The open house is free to the public; all expenses will be paid by TCSA.
The event will offer skeet, trap, rifle shooting, silhouette shooting, cowboy action, a handgun range and archery.
With New York State laws the club can allow youth ages 12 to 17 an opportunity to shoot a handgun when an event is NRA sanctioned. TCSA will have certified NRA instructors on hand, and expertise in all the shooting sports TCSA provides.
The club asks that you inform them in advance of your intention to attend the event.
Send the president of TCSA, James Gee, an email at email@example.com
and inform him you are attending and how many kids you will be bringing with you.
