STAC SOFTBALL: OWEGO FALTERS LATE IN LOSS TO U-E (2022-05-04)

Tioga County Sports Report
OWEGO — Owego grabbed the early lead, but surrendered seven runs over the final two innings in a 10-7 STAC softball loss to Union-Endicott here Wednesday.

Trailing, 7-3, the Tigers began their comeback with two outs in the top of the sixth inning. A single, walk and error loaded the bases, then U-E followed up with an RBI walk and a 2-run error to make it a 7-6 game.

U-E started out the seventh with back-to-back singles and a sacrifice bunt, then scored on a two-out walk, which was followed by an RBI single and two-run single.

Sophia Palladino smacked a one-out double in the Indians’ final at-bats and Taylor Dalton drew a two-out walk, but Owego was unable to push any more runs across.

U-E took advantage of a pair of errors to grab an early 2-0 lead in the first, but Owego got a run back in its half of the inning when Jordan Greeno singled and scored on an error off Sarah Terry’s bat.

An error and four consecutive walks allowed the Indians to grab a 3-2 lead in the second.

The Tigers would tie the score in their half of the third, but the Indians countered in their half of the inning on singles by Terry and Layla Etienne, and a triple by Brooklyn Gaurnier.

Alex Aubel singled in the fifth, Etienne drew a base on balls, Gaurnier plated Aubel with a sacrifice bunt and Dalton brought Etienne home with a single to give Owego a 7-3 advantage.

Dalton, Greeno, Terry, Aubel, Etienne, Palladino and Gaurnier had one hit apiece for the Indians with Aubel and Etienne scoring two runs each, and Gaurnier driving in two runs. Greeno, Terry and Gaurnier scored one run apiece, and Dalton, Greeno, Gilbert, and Etienne added one RBI each.

Gilbert gave up eight hits and three walks, and struck out three, but allowed just two earned runs as U-E took advantage of seven errors.

Owego (7-6) hosts Chenango Forks (3-8) Friday.
