IAC SOFTBALL: NEWARK VALLEY OUTSLUGS NEWFIELD, 13-11; RECORDS TRIPLE PLAY (2022-04-12)

NEWFIELD — Newark Valley erupted for five sixth-inning runs, then recorded a triple play to outslug Newfield, 13-11, in IAC softball action here Monday.

With NV trailing by three, Laura Ludwig and Kayden Rockwell ignited the surge, reaching base on an error and walk, respectively. With one away, Rae Mathewson stroked an RBI single to cut the lead to 10-8, however, the Trojans would record another out on the next batter.

That would bring the top of the order to the plate and Hayley Beebe responded by reaching on an error and Mackenzie Malone followed with an RBI single. Leah Austin Whittaker stepped to the plate and smacked a three-run triple to give the Cardinals a 13-10 advantage.

The first two Newfield batters would walk in the bottom of the inning but a Newark Valley triple play wiped out the threat. It started when Mathewson shagged a fly ball in left field, then catcher Rachael Walker threw to third baseman for an out Whittaker. Meanwhile, the runner at first was called out for leaving base early.

NV put two runners on in the seventh, but failed to score. The Cardinals gave up two walks, then an RBI single with two down in the bottom of the inning, but Malone struck out the final batter to secure the victory.

Newfield scored its first seven runs without registering a hit, taking advantage of 12 walks and an error to force a 7-7 deadlock after three innings.

The Trojans added two more walks,a single and a fielder’s choice to grab a 9-7 lead in the fourth.

A single by Malone, an error off the bat of Whittaker and ana Ludwig’s RBI fielder’s choice gave Newark Valley an early 2-0 lead.

In the second, Katie Berghorn walked and scored on a passed ball. Beebe singled, Malone reached on an error, Whittaker added an RBI single, Walker reached on an error. Malone and Whittaker would also score to make it 6-1 in NV’s favor.

Each team scored a run in the third and fifth. Berghorn walked, stole second and tallied on Beebe’s single in the third. Sandy Vaughn singled, moved to second on a passed ball and scored on a double from Malone in the fifth.

NV (2-1) hosts Watkins Glen (0-4) Monday.
