OWEGO - Katie Shoen broke the school record and Summer Pierce just missed the pool record as Owego won seven events at the Section IV Class B Girls Swimming / Diving Preliminaries here Wednesday.

Shoen posted a time of 24.06 seconds in her victory in the 50-yard freestyle, shaving a quarter-second off the record she set last year (24.31). She came in with a seed time of 24.88. Shoen also beat the meet record set by Alexa Gault in 2014 (24.37) and also bested the state cut (24.84).

Pierce easily beat the state qualifying time of 1:00.02 in winning the 100 butterfly, posting a time of 56.72 seconds. That effort just missed the pool record by 0.02 seconds and her own school record by .23 seconds.

Pierce also won the 200 individual medley in 2:10.82, making the state cut (2:12.84), while Shoen also won the 100 backstroke with a time of 58.97, beating the state cut (1:00.42).

Pierce and Shoen teamed up with Ashleigh Gault and Emma Stephenson to break the Indians' 4-year-old meet record in the 200 medley relay (1:49.37), winning with a time of 1:49.05 and making the state cut. Pierce was on the record-setting squad in 2014 also.

Jennifer Scott joined Pierce, Shoen and Stephenson to win the 400 free relay with a time of 3:43.53, and Gault was the Indians' other individual winner, claiming the 100 free in 55.46.

Gault and Stephenson added a pair of second-place finishes in the 100 back (1:01.55) and 200 free (2:02.39), respectively. Stephenson was also third in the 500 free (5:44.82) and Scott placed third in the 50 free (25.37).

Gault, Emma French, Jenna Bergmann and Scott placed third in the 200 free relay (1:44.12). French took fourth in the 100 back (1:04.97) and seventh in the 100 free (58.61) and Scott was fifth in the 100 fly (1:03.95). Abigail Lavo had Owego's other top-8 showing, finishing sixth in the 500 free 6:06.12.

Other Owego swimmers advancing to the finals, which will be held Saturday, are: Lavo, 19th in the 200 free (2:17.17); Allison Fisher, 10th in the 100 breaststroke (1:18.6); Kailee Payne, 11th in the 100 breast (1:18.66); Holly Kersten, 12th in the 200 free (2:18.01); Leah Watson, 13th in the 200 free (2:18.03) and 100 fly (1:13.92); Taylor Pierce, 13th in the 200 IM (2:39.75); Bergmann, 14th in the 100 free (1:02.66) and 15th in the 50 free (27.04); Allison Shoen, 15th in the 100 back (1:15.62) and Ashleigh Allen, 16th in the 100 fly (1:18.51).

The finals begin at 1 p.m. at Watkins Glen High School.

NOTE: The diving competition will be held Friday at Watkins Glen at 3:30 p.m. Payne is the top seed.
