WATKINS GLEN — Newark Valley defeated Watkins Glen, 18-6, here Monday to give Val Fischer a victory in her debut as the new head coach.

“The energy today was great all around,” Fischer said. “The team is very excited for this season as am I.”

Junior Hayley Beebe started off with a first-pitch double to set the tone for the rest of the game.

Junior Leah Austin Whittaker went 3-for-5 with a walk. In the top of the fourth inning, she belted a 3-run home run over the left field fence.

Freshman Laura Ludwig went 4-for-6 with two walks and reaching base on every at-bat she had. In the third inning her first varsity hit was a double, bringing in two runs.

“We are proud to start off with a win and continue our momentum into Wednesday’s home opener against Waverly,” Fischer said.
