IAC SOFTBALL: S-VE DOMINANT IN EARLY-SEASON ACTION (2022-04-04)

SPENCER — The S-VE softball has started the season on a dominant note, racking up 31 runs without allowing any in its first two outings.

After starting the season with a 16-0 victory over Watkins Glen on the road Wednesday, the Panthers handled Newfield, 15-0, in five innings in their home opener here Monday.

The S-VE pitchers, Rhiana Lawrence and Sydney Presher, have combined to strike out 30 batters while only allowing four hits.

“Both our girls are good girls,” S-VE coach Ron Miller said, “and I’ve got a good group of kids here.

“A lot of girls came back this year. We have seven starters back from last year, so that’s good.”

S-VE 15, WATKINS GLEN 0
Lawrence struck out seven batters in three innings and Presher struck out nine in four frames. The Senecas managed two singles and two walks and added a fifth base runner on an error.

The Panthers picked up the only run they would need when Presher walked and scored in the top of the second.

Raegan Sudnikovich, Hannah Martinez, Katelyn Klym and Dakota Jackman walked and scored in the third while Presher and Sophia Dutra contributed RBI singles, and Presher scored her second run.

In the fourth, Klym doubled and scored, Jackman and Presher reached on errors and tallied runs, Adrienna Farmer was hit by a pitch and scored, Faith Brenchley had a two-run single, Sudnikovich had an RBI double and a run, and Martinez added an RBI double.

Presher had a double and a run, and Dutra had an RBI triple and a run in the fifth.

Sudnikovich added a double and a run, and Martinez had an RBI double and a run in the seventh.

S-VE 15, NEWFIELD 0 (5 innings)
Lawrence and Presher combined to chalk up 14 strikeouts. Lawrence collected eight over three innings and Presher had six in the final two frames.

S-VE went ahead, 4-0, in the first as Lawrence reached on an error and scored on Brenchley’s triple over the centerfielder’s head.

With one away, Martinez delivered an RBI single and Klym followed with a single.

Brenchley scored after Martinez’s hit and Klym scored on a passed ball. With two down, Presher and Dutra added base hits.

Sudnokovich smacked a two-out solo home run to left in the second inning to make it 5-0.

Jackman walked to start off the bottom of the third and scored on an error off the bat of Presher. Farmer reached on a fielder’s choice at the plate, then Lawrence and Brenchley hit consecutive RBI singles. Sudnikovich followed with a single and scored on an error off the bat of Martinez, pushing the Panther advantage to 10-0.

Pressure walked and Hannah Smith singled with one away in the fourth, then Kaili Root and Lawrence added RBI doubles. Brenchley reached on an error and scored on a Martinez single.

The Trojans worked a two-out walk in the top of the first, then Lawrence fanned six consecutive batters before her no-hitter was broken up on a Mina Thomas double to the left-centerfield gap.

Presher walked the second batter she faced, then struck out the last five to end the game.

Lawrence and Brenchley each went 2-for-4 with three runs and two RBI. Martinez was 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run, and Sudnikovich was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.

Presher went 1-for-2 with a run and RBI, Root added a hit, run and RBI, and Smith tacked on a hit and a run.

“When she put it over the plate we hit it pretty well,”Miller said. “Tomorrow we face Dryden and they’ve got a little better pitcher and a lot better team.

“It's only the second game and we’ve got a pretty good team. We’ve just got to keep focused.”
