Tioga County Sports Report
OWEGO — With the majority of its roster back, the Owego softball team is not only looking to improve on last year’s 7-8 record, but also become a contender in the STAC and Section IV Class B chases.

The Indians fell to eventual champion Susquehanna Valley in extra innings in the sectional quarterfinals. Several of the Owego players will be on the field again when the two teams meet in Conklin Wednesday.

Among Owego’s key players coming back is senior captain Lauren Gilbert, who will lead the way in the circle this season.

Junior Jordan Greeno and sophomore Taylor Dalton return to man the middle infield.

Sarah Terry and Saylor Ayers, both juniors, return at first base and catcher, respectively.

Also returning are senior outfielder Carly Kirtland and junior outfielders Maddie Bennett, Natalie Donovan and Layla Etienne.

Also back are sophomores Alex Aubel, who can play both infield and outfield, first baseman Ava Brown and third baseman Brooklyn Gaurnier.

New faces joining the program this year include junior Sophia Palladino in the outfield and Chelsea Rollison, a pitcher and utility player.

“With a veteran roster we are looking to build off last year’s sectional playoff appearance,” said second-year head coach Brent Doane. “We play in a tough division and face talented teams at every turn so the challenge will be great.”

Owego opens the season at home against Johnson City Monday.
