NEW YORK STATE GIRLS BASKETBALL: NEWARK VALLEY CRUISES INTO CLASS C SEMIS (2022-03-13)

Tioga County Sports Report
TIOGA COUNTY — Section IV champion Newark Valley took control early and cruised to a 55-30 victory over Section III champion Waterville in NYSPHSAA Class C girls basketball state quarterfinal action here Sunday.

“So proud of this team and their ability to overcome adversity and get the job done,” Schweiger said. “Going on the road for a two-hour ride to face a section champion on their own floor is not ideal, but we handled it and took care of business.”

“We put in another top-notch defensive game, holding them to 30 points,” NV coach Greg Schweiger said.

“It was not our best shooting day by far, but thankfully Taylor Benjamin went off, killing them with transition buckets.

“I also thought Grace Gardner had an outstanding game controlling their bigs and showing that she was the best post player on the court.

Benjamin hit for five points in a 10-4 first-quarter surge while Cha and Grace Gardner combined for the other five.

NV opened things up with a 17-5 second-quarter run. Benjamin put up nine markers and Hayley Beebe added five points to triple up the Indians at the half, 27-9.

Waterville attempted to dig itself out of the hole in the third period with a dozen points, but the Cardinals countered with 13. Benjamin added seven more to her total and the Gardners tacked on a combined six more.

Leading, 40-21, NV outscored the Indians 15-9 in the final frame to rack up its 22nd consecutive victory.

Benjamin dominated the scoreboard with 27 points. She also had four steals, three rebounds and an assist.

Grace Gardner grabbed 13 boards, 11 on the defensive end, and tacked on five points, five assists, four blocks and two steals.

Beebe contributed nine points, five rebounds, four steals, two assists and a block; and Cha Gardner recorded six points, six boards, two blocks and a steal.

Hannah Ferguson added four points, eight rebounds, three assists and a steal; Raechel Walker pitched in with two points, three boards and a block; Jazmine Graham had two points, four rebounds and a steal; and Faith Payne tacked on two rebounds.

“I'm very happy that these players get to extend their season one more week and get to chase their ultimate goal,” Schweiger said. “I also want to thank all of our cheerleaders and fans that traveled so well and filled Waterville's gym with red and black.”

Natalee and Eleonor Collins scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, to lead Waterville (21-3). Ciara Owens canned two 3-pointers and Adrienne Neff had one.

The Cardinals (23-1), ranked No. 1 in the state, will head to Hudson Valley Community College in Troy Saturday morning to face Section II champion Duanesburg in a 10:45 a.m. semifinal.

The Eagles (23-2) dropped Section VII champion Northern Adirondack, 79-54.
