IAC BOYS BASKETBALL: LATE SCORING SLUMP LEADS TO OT LOSS FOR S-VE (2022-01-14)

GROTON — S-VE appeared headed for victory here Friday before a fourth-quarter scoring slump led to a 57-54 overtime loss to Groton in IAC boys basketball crossover action.

The Panthers took control of the game in the third quarter and headed into the final period with a 49-40 lead. However, they could only muster five points in the last stanza, then were held without a point in OT.

S-VE kept it close in the first half, trailing 33-32 at the break. Tyler Doster scored 10 points in the first 16 minutes while Markus Brock connected for nine and Logan Jewell had six. Pavel Jofre added another five in the second period.

Jewell scored another nine in the third quarter to help the Panthers build a lead.

Kael Eldred gave the Indians four points, and Mason Slade and Omari Riley-Israel added three apiece to pace the Groton comeback.

Slade, who finished with 12 points, went 3-for-4 at the free throw line in overtime.

The lost spoiled a nice double-double by Doster, who scored 12 points and pulled down 13 rebounds, and also blocked one shot.

Jewell led all scorers with 15 points, and also had nine rebounds, five assists and five steals.

Brock contributed a dozen points to go with seven boards, five assists and four blocks.

Jofre had seven points, four rebounds and two steals; Aiden Swayze added four points, six rebounds and two blocks; and Nathan Gillette and Hunter Harmon tacked on two points each.

S-VE hosts Waverly Saturday afternoon.
