SPENCER — S-VE held Groton to one second-quarter point while riding a trio of three-point opportunities to a 42-36 victory in an IAC girls basketball crossover here Friday.
With her team trailing the Indians, 11-8, in the second period, Abby Bunce converted a traditional 3-point play to tie the game with 5:45 to go in the half.
Meanwhile, Taya Sousa and Hannah Martinez would go downtown to get their 3-point scores. Sousa's trey came just 38 seconds after Bunce scored and gave the Panthers a 14-11 advantage. Then, after Groton hit a free throw, Martinez would drain a three to make it 17-12 at 2:45.
S-VE would close out the first half with Sousa feeding Sophia Dutra to make it 19-12.
Dutra pumped out another eight points in the third quarter and Sousa added another trey, but Groton cut the lead to 30-27 behind seven points from Abby Dykeman.
Martinez got hot from long range in the final frame, knocking down a pair of threes, while Sousa added three points.
Dutra recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. She also had three assists, two steals and a block. Martinez contributed 11 points and two assists; Sousa finished with nine points, two assists and a block; and Bunce added five points, nine boards and a pair of blocked shots. Sydney Presher chipped in with four points and Marah Cooper had four rebounds and three assists.
Dykeman led the visitors with 10 points.
S-VE hosts Newfield Tuesday.
