COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL: TIOGA COUNTY CONNECTION HEADING TO NATIONALS WITH UNBEATEN BROOME COMMUNITY COLLEGE (2021-11-01)

SANBORN, N.Y. — Unbeaten SUNY Broome Community College (16-0) is heading to the 2021 NJCAA Division III Volleyball Championship after sweeping the Region III tournament at Niagara County Community College here this past weekend.

The Hornets defeated Erie CC in the Region III Championship B match Sunday, 25-18, 25-23 and 25-20.

Owego grad Macey Gibson led the offense with 10 kills with a .307 hitting percentage. Owego grad Mackenzie Struble handed out 29 assists and served up four aces while Sara Zepkowski, also an Owego grad, registered seven blocks. 

Broome went 3-0 in Pool B play Saturday.

The Hornets swept Adirondack CC, 25-11, 25-5 and 25-16.  Zepkowski posted eight kills and eight blocks; Gibson added seven kills and four aces; and Struble dished out 28 assists and had 13 digs. 

Next up was Finger Lakes CC, which BCC defeated,  25-20, 25-19 and 25-15. Gibson had 11 kills; Struble contributed 32 assists and three aces; and Zepkowski tacked on seven blocks.  

BCC ended the day beating Jefferson CC, 25-17, 25-15 and 25-20. Gibson recorded 13 kills; Zepkowski added four blocks; and Struble had 37 assists and four aces.

Struble was named the tournament MVP and Gibson was selected to the all-tournament team.

Prior to pool play on Saturday, Struble and Zepkowski were named to the All-Region team and Coach Ashleen Speen was named the Region III Coach of the Year. 

Also part of the BCC team are Owego grad Maddy Powell and Tioga grad Bri Rossi.

Broome, ranked sixth nationally, will compete in the 2021 NJCAA DIII Volleyball Championship at the Rochester Regional Sports Center in Rochester, Minnesota Nov. 11-13.
