STAC GIRLS SWIMMING & DIVING: OWEGO BATTLES TOUGH IN LOSS TO WINDSOR (2021-09-21)

OWEGO — Owego won half the events, but a lack of depth cost the Indians in 79-57 loss to Windsor in STAC girls swimming and diving action here Tuesday.

Emma Pawlak was a triple winner while Madison Allen, Kaelyn Katchuk and Allie Shoen two events apiece.

Pawlak captured the 100-yard freestyle and 200 free races with times of 1:09.12 and 2:31.41, respectively.

Allen won the 100 backstroke in 1:31.64.

Shoen took the 500 free, clocking 6:41.53.

Katchuk continued to dominate the diving competition, scoring 252.65 points. The freshman currently ranks first in Section IV Class B and second overall in the section. She is also No. 12 in the state and is the highest-ranking 9th-grader.

Allen, Katchuk, Pawlak and Shoen also teamed up to take the 400 free relay, posting a time of 4:56.38.

The quartet was second in the 200 free relay in 2:08.73.

Shoen was also second in the 200 individual medley (2:58.07).

Placing third was Allen in the 50 free (33:45 seconds).

Charlotte Kozak contributed points with 5th-place finishes in the 50 free (38.33 seconds) and the 100 free (1:25.72).

With a roster of five, it hasn't been an easy season for the Indians, but the team hasn't given up.

"The girls are showing up," Owego coach Luci Taylor said. "We're doing what we need to to stay motivated and keep going.

"It's tough. We have a significant number of girls on modified this year which is helping. We're really trying to unify the modified and varsity so we can rebuild our team.

The Indians entered just 10 of the 12 events due to their small roster, but were more evenly matched with the Black Knights.

"We were matched up pretty well with Windsor, which is nice," Taylor said. "The girls wanted some competition. The past two meets, we were swimming against bigger teams with lots of girls. We weren't getting the races in that I wanted to, so it was nice to have some good competition."

Owego's first two opponents, Chenango Forks and Chenango Valley, both have rosters numbering greater than 20 competitors while Windsor has 13.

Katchuk will be competing in the Owego Dive Invitational Saturday.

Owego (0-3) travels to Oneonta (3-0) Tuesday.
