SECTION IV FIELD HOCKEY: SIDNEY PULLS AWAY FROM NEWARK VALLEY (2021-09-17)

SIDNEY — Sidney won for the fourth time in five outings, gradually pulling away from Newark Valley for a 5-1 Section IV field hockey victory here Friday.

The Warriors got things going when Ava Cirigliano scored on a pass from Anna Dewey off a penalty corner at 11:23 of the first quarter.

At 7:39 of the second period, Kayla McEwan put away a pass from Bailey Gifford in front of the goal.

Cirigliano and Dewey teamed up again in the third with Cirigliano making the first shot on another corner at 7:53.

McEwan picked up her second goal at 10:53 of the fourth period after kicking the ball.

The Cardinals got on the scoreboard with 6:17 remaining in the game when Katie Berghorn scored on a rebound.

Gifford closed out the scoring with 1:31 to go when she found the cage on a rebound.

Sidney outshot NV, 12-6, and held an 8-2 advantage in corners.

Rachael Walker made five saves for NV while Hailey Engbith and Karli Berghorn had one defensive save each.

Ky Phillips and Olivia Gavin had two saves apiece for Sidney, and Madison Burnett had a defensive save.

NV (2-2) hosts Owego Monday.
