YOUTH BASEBALL (10U): OWEGO (GREGORY) TOPS M-E (NOVOTNY) IN HIGH-SCORING AFFAIR IN U-E TOURNEY QUARTERFINALS (2021-07-23)

ENDICOTT — Owego (Gregory) was a man down to start the 10B division quarterfinals of the U-E Little League 10U All-Star Tournament, but came back to defeat Maine-Endwell (Novotny), 13-11, here Friday.

Owego scored five runs in the third and five more in the fifth to did its elf out of a pair of four-run holes.

Trailing, 4-0, after an inning while fielding just eight players, Owego rallied for five runs in the top of the third after returning to full strength. Jeremiah Wheeler, Lincoln Miller, Rocco Canfield and Dylan Gregory started the inning with consecutive singles, Truett Hall grounded out to score a run and Landon Boccasini single to knot the game at four. Following a walk to Nick Tavelli, Ben Harvey singled to make it 5-4 in favor of Owego.

M-E tied the game in its half of the third, but consecutive singles by Miller, Canfield and Gregor, and Hall's RBI ground out put Owego back on top, 6-5, in the fourth. Joram Belokur added an RBI single to make it 7-5.

However, M-E rode three hits, three walks and an error to an 11-7 advantage in its half of the inning.

Owego refused to give in and retaliated with five fifth-inning scores. Harvey singled, Wheeler followed with an RBI double, and Miller and Canfield added RBI singles, cutting the lead to 11-10.

M-E would record a pair of outs, but Boccasini and Belokur responded with back-to-back singles with Belokur plating a pair of runs, giving Owego a 12-11 edge.

Owego added an insurance run in the sixth as Harvey reached on an error, Wheeler singled and Harvey scored following a double play.

Harvey would strike out the side in the sixth to seal the victory and pick up the win. He went 2 2/3 innings without allowing a hit. He struck out six and walked two.

Owego cranked out 20 hits on the day to overcome nine errors.

Canfield went 4-for-4 for Owego with three runs and two RBI. Miller was 4-for-5 with three runs and an RBI, and Wheeler was 4-for-5 with two runs and an RBI.

Harvey and Boccasini had two hits, two runs and an RBI each; Belokur chipped in with two hits and three RBI; and Gregory added two hits, a run and an RBI. Hall drove in a pair of RBI.

Owego faces top-seeded Susquehanna Valley in the semifinals Saturday at Northside Park.
