YOUTH BASEBALL (12U): WEATHER PLAYS ROLE IN CANDOR RUNNER-UP SHOWING AT OWEGO TOURNEY (2021-07-13)

OWEGO — Candor racked up six runs in the first inning of the 12C championship game at the Owego Little League 10U / 12U Tournament here Tuesday, leading to an 11-2 victory over top-seeded Johnson City (Stallman).

That win forced a second game between the two teams, but unfortunately for Candor, JC was leading, 5-4, in the bottom of the fifth inning when lightning stopped play, giving JC the title.

Candor lit up the scoreboard early as Kyle Jantz and Kellen W smacked doubles while Mason Rose, Cooper Dember and Wyatt Anderson contributed singles. Donny Mackie and Brody Ahart were hit by pitches.

JC responded with a run in the bottom of the first, but Candor countered with two more runs in the second as Rose doubled home Jantz and Williamson smacked a two-run home run one out later.

Johnson City scored its second run in the fourth, but Candor tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the sixth. With two away, Teagan Kwiatkowski belted a triple, then scored on a Jantz single. Jantz would add the game's final run by stealing second, third and home.

Jantz went 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs and an RBI; Williamson was 2-for-3 with two runs and four RBI; and Rose was 2-for-4 two runs and one RBI.

Dember contributed a hit, run and two RBI; Anderson recorded a hit and two RBI; Kwiatkowski added a hit and a run; Mackie and Ahart scored one run apiece; and Link Robinson had a hit.

Rose collected the win, throwing five innings of five-hit ball, walking three and striking out five. Mackie took the mound for the final inning, allowing a pair of hits and striking out two.

JC got the lead early, Candor rallied to tie, but surrendered it back in the bottom of the third.

Rose had a one-out single and Williamson posted a two-out RBI single to put Candor up 1-0 in the first, but JC countered in its half of the inning with a triple, single and three walks to go in front, 3-1.

Kwiatkowski led off the third with a single, Jantz walked, and Rose and Mackie followed with RBI singles to make it 3-3 contest.

JC came back in the bottom of the inning with two walks, an RBI ground out and an RBI single to grab a 5-3 advantage.

Candor got a run back in the fifth as Jantz walked, stole second and third, and scored on a Mackie single.

Johnson City had two outs against it and a 1-1 count on the batter when the game was halted in the bottom of the fifth.

Candor outhit JC, 7-5, as Rose went 2-for-3 with a run and RBI, and Mackie was 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Jantz scored twice, Williamson added a hit and RBI, Kwiatkowski had a hit and a run; and Robinson had a hit.

It was the second runner-up showing of the season for Candor which was second at the M-E tournament and ended the season with an 11-3-1 record.
