SECTION IV TRACK & FIELD: NEWARK VALLEY'S WILLIAMS WINS TWICE; RIEGEL, SHERWOOD TAKE STEEPLECHASES (2021-06-08)

TRUMANSBURG — Leah Williams won two jumping events while Renee Riegel and Jonny Sherwood won the steeplechase races to highlight Newark Valley's day at the Section IV Class C1 Track & Field meet here Tuesday.
Williams won the long jump with a leap of 15-10 and landed the triple at 35-7 to make it a two-win day.
Riegel won the 2,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 8:21.58.
Sherwood clocked 10:44.93 in the 3,000 steeplechase, dominating that event by more than one minute. He would add a second-place showing in the 3200 in 10:34.81.
Josh Duke was the runner-up in the shot put with a heave of 38-3 1/4 and Kylee Carrier took second in the discus with a throw of 85-7. She was also third in the shot put at 28-3 1/2 and he was sixth in the discus with a toss of 94-5.
Kathryn Simmons added a runner-up finish in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:11.29 and took third in the 100 hurdles, posting a time of 17.87 seconds.
The lady Cardinals' 4x800 relay, which consisted of Harley Switzer, Breanna Brigham, Molly McCloskey and Emma Smith, ran a second-place time of 12:11.21.
All first-and second-place finishers qualified for the Section IV Showcase, which will be held Saturday at Marathon.
The Class C meet recognized the top six finishers with podium awards. Following are other NV competitors who reached the podium.
BOYS
Derrick Kalpokas came in third in the pole vault (10-6) and sixth in the triple jump (38-7).
Mark Vosburgh placed third in the steeplechase (12:30.24) and sixth in the 400 hurdles (1:13.92).
John Boldis took third in the 800 (2:10.96).
Aiden Hollenbeck was fourth in the pole vault (10-6).
Brandon Randell placed fourth in the 400 hurdles (1:09.76).
John Simmons claimed the fourth spot in thew 110 hurdles (:18.15).
Connor Yetter crossed the finish line fourth in the 3200 (11:29.63).
Patrick Bishop grabbed fifth in the 1600 (5:19.41).
Seth Hartenstein finished fifth in the 800 (2:14.03).
The 4x800 relay recorded a fourth-place time of 9:14.05.
GIRLS
Rosie Hines finished third in the steeplechase (10:47.43).
McCloskey took fourth in the 800 (2:58.04).
Maris Aylesworth registered a fifth place in the 200 (:28.41).
Switzer came in fifth in the 1500 (5:47.37).
Ashleigh Turnbull claimed fifth in the 800 (3:16.39).
Smith took sixth in the 3,000 (14:10.49).
The 4x400 relay finished third with a time of 4:31.56).
