SECTION IV GIRLS LACROSSE: OWEGO FADES IN LATTER STAGES OF CLASS C QUARTERFINAL LOSS (2021-06-07)

Tioga County Sports Report
JOHNSON CITY — Third-seeded Owego hung tough with second-seeded Johnson City for more than 40 minutes, but the Wildcats would pull away down the stretch to post a 12-6 victory in the Section IV Class C quarterfinals here Monday night.

"We did a lot better in the first half with our passing," Owego coach Ashlee Marsh said. "We couldn't seem to catch the ball as much as we wanted to the second half to get a fast break down the field."

With JC clinging to a 5-4 edge heading into the final 20 minutes of action, Emily Marshall would score her only goal of the night to give the home team a two-goal lead.

Shelby Pepper took over after that, scoring the Wildcats' next three goals at 16:43, 11:14 and 7:04 to make it a 9-5 contest.

Brooke Bezek followed with a goal at 5:54 and Sydney Majewski tallied 30 seconds later to increase the JC advantage to 11-5.

Majewski would add a goal for good measure with 57 seconds remaining in the game.

Bezek got the scoring started with 21:59 left in the first half, but the Indians' Annika Kinney evened things up with a goal at 18:57.

That's when Johnson City's Ryan Johnson got hot, scoring three consecutive goals. They came at 18:06, 15:13 and 14:21. Majewski assisted on the third one.

Abby Lavo would put Owego back on the scoreboard with 1:48 to go in the half, cutting the lead to 4-2.

Johnson would put away one more shot before the break, scoring with 30 ticks on the clock to make it 5-2 at intermission.

Ellie Sherwood had the hot stick early in the second half, scoring goals at 23:38 and 21:22 to cut the JC lead to 5-4.

Kinney scored her second goal of the night at 14:55, making it 7-5.

Ashlyn Middendorf contributed to the scoring with a goal with 2:07 left in the game.

Owego ends the season with a 2-12 record.

It was a tough season for the Indians, but Marsh was pleased with the way her players conducted themselves.

"They stayed classy the whole time. They didn't give up regardless of what our schedule was and they fought hard until the very last second, so I'm very proud of them."

Marsh believes the future looks bright for Owego's returning players.

"I think they have really good team chemistry and they work well together, and they pass the ball, so I'm looking forward to seeing what we can do next year."

JC (7-7) hosts Maine-Endwell (9-5) for the title.
