SECTION IV SOFTBALL: GREENE PROVES TO BE TOO MUCH FOR S-VE IN CLASS C QUARTERFINAL (2021-06-07)

Tioga County Sports Report
GREENE — Fifth-seeded Spencer-Van Etten struggled offensively and committed five errors as it fell to No. 4 Greene, 10-0, in the Section IV Class C quarterfinals here Monday.

The Panthers would put the lead-off batter on base in the top of the first, third and sixth innings, only to watch Trojan pitcher Olivia Kennedy retire the side each time. The junior standout, who hurled two perfect games plus a third no-hitter this season, also retired the side in the second, fourth and seventh innings. She had nine strikeouts, and allowed one hit and two walks.

Rhiana Lawrence would open the game with a single up the middle and make her way to third before being stranded. She also reached via a walk in the sixth. Gillian Jackman would lead off the third inning with a walk and reach third base as well.

One notable difference in the game was what happened to the ball when it came off the bat. Greene seemed to find the holes while S-VE hit it right at the Trojan fielders.

Greene showed why it has only lost twice this season as it took a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Dayani Lora reached on an error and scored the game-winning run on Payton Yahner's single through the left side of the infield.

McKenzie Scott smacked an RBI triple to the left center field gap. Scott would score when a pitch bounced out of the dirt and under the umpire's arm, and when he lifted his arm up the ball fell out and rolled to the backstop. Alex Brown found the right center field gap for a triple and scored on Giaz Lora's single through the left side.

Lawrence would retire the next two batters and avoid trouble in the second and third innings. In the second she teamed up with catcher Raegan Sudnikovich to nail Dayani Lora out at the plate for the third out.

Greene would pick up two more runs in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. The Trojans capitalized on a two-out double and an error in the fourth, two errors and two base hits in the fifth, and a hit batter, a double and an error in the sixth.

S-VE's Gillian Jackman laid down a bunt and reached base on an error to start the third, and Sydney Presher moved her to third on a sacrifice bunt, but the next two batters hit the ball right to the second baseman.

Taya Sousa walked in the fifth, moved to second on a Jackman sac bunt, but was stranded there.

Dayani Lora and Brown led the Trojans with three hits apiece.

S-VE ends the season with an 11-4 record while Greene moves on to face top-seeded Deposit /Hancock, a 14-3 winner over Edison. Deposit won the 2019 Class D state championship, then merged with Hancock.
