IAC SOFTBALL: NEWARK VALLEY SURGES LATE TO DOWN CANDOR (2021-06-04)

NEWARK VALLEY — Newark Valley came away with six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull away from Candor, 11-4, in IAC softball action here Thursday.

Allie Walker started things off with a double, Berghorn reached on an error, Wright singled and Allie Wandell followed with a two-run single. The Indians would register a pair of outs, then Mackenzie Malone got on on an error, Rachel Walker drove in two runs with a base hit and Ari Westbrook singled in a run. Allie Walker and Berghorn would get on base via error and single, respectively, in their second at-bats of the inning.

The Indians put a pair of runners on with two away in the seventh, but were unable to push any runs across.

Candor got the scoring going in the second when Chloe White reached on an error, Janelle Marsh singled and Kristi White plated a run with a ground out. Addie Aman and Asia Curkendall followed with doubles, and Marsh and Aman would score to give the visitors a 3-0 advantage.

The Cardinals pushed a trio of runs across in their half of the inning to knot things up. Rachel Walker reached on an error, Allie Walker drew a one-out walk and Wright was issued a base on balls with two away. Wandell drove in two runs with a single and Bri Beebe's base hit scored the third run.

Newark Valley grabbed the lead for good in the fourth, 5-3, after Berghorn reached on an error, Wright was hit by a pitch and Wandell smacked a run-scoring triple.

The Indians picked up their final run in the fifth when Curkendall singled, stole second and scored on Anna Greeno's RBI double.

Wandell had a strong day at the plate, leading NV's 10 hit attack, going 4-for-4 with a triple, double two runs and five RBI. Rachel Walker contributed a hit, two runs and two RBI; Allie Walker, Berghorn and Wright added one hit and two runs apiece; Beebe and Westbrook chipped in with one hit and one RBI each; and Malone tacked on a run.

The Indians had 10 hits as well with Aman going 2-for-3 with a run, and Curkendall and Chloe White each going 2-for-4 with a run. Kristi White had a hit and RBI, Marsh had a hit and a run, and Greeno and Sierra Schweiger added one hit apiece.

Newark Valley ended the regular season at 6-8 and Candor finished at 4-6.
