IAC SOFTBALL: NEWARK VALLEY FALLS TO DEFENDING STATE CHAMP EDISON (2021-05-25)

ELMIRA HEIGHTS — Defending Class C state champion Edison jumped on Newark Valley early to roll to a 16-1 victory in six innings in IAC softball action here Tuesday.

The Spartans' Sidney Cooper, Maliyah McIver, Gabby Milazzo and Leah Austin-Whitaker scored two runs apiece in the bottom of the first inning to build a 12-1 cushion.

Edison added single runs in the second, third, fifth and sixth.

The Cardinals picked up their run in their first at-bats as Allie Wandell smacked a lead-off single and scored on Jasmine Graham's sacrifice.

NV had seven hits on the day with Wandell and Bri Beebe both going 2-for-3. Mackenzie Malone, Katie Berghorn and Joslyn Wright added one hit each.

Cooper and Hannah Smith led Edison's 15-hit attack with three hits apiece. Payton Littlefield, Austin-Whitaker and Ashlynn Maggs had two hits each.

NV hosts Candor Wednesday.
