IAC SOFTBALL: NEWARK VALLEY UPSETS WAVERLY IN EXTRA INNINGS (2021-05-19)

WAVERLY — Newark Valley lost a 5-0 lead, but bounced back to upset Waverly, 6-5, in eight innings in IAC softball action here Tuesday.

Hayley Beebe scored the game-winning run with two out in the top of the eighth. She singled to left field and advanced to second, then third on defensive indifference, and raced home on a dropped third strike .

An inning earlier, the Wolverines rallied from five runs down with their backs against the wall to extend the game.

Michaela Lauper started things off with a single and one out later Jaydn Babcock singled to put runners at the corners. An error off the bat of Sidney Tomasso loaded the bags, then Hali Jenner walked to plate Waverly's first run. Following another out, Aubrey Ennis belted a line drive grand slam to center field to extend the game.

A single, an error and a pair of walks led to NV lead-off hitter Allie Wandell scoring to open the game.

The score would remain 1-0 until the Cardinals reeled off single runs in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings.

Bri Beebe singled and scored on an error off the bat of Rachel Walker in the fourth and Hayley Beebe was hit by a pitch and scored on Allie walker's base hit in the fifth.

In the sixth, Bri Beebe singled again and scored on an error by the right fielder.

Jasmine Graham walked and, following an error, a sacrifice bunt and a hit batter, scored on Ari Westbrook's single to make it a 5-0 ball game.

Bri Beebe was the only NV player with two hits while she and Hayley Beebe scored two runs apiece.

Ennis paced Waverly with three hits and four RBI.
