SPENCER — Rhiana Lawrence twirled a one-hitter and struck out 12 batters as Spencer-Van Etten defeated Newark Valley, 7-2, in IAC action here Tuesday.

NV's Allie Wandell walked and scored in the top of the first inning, but the Panthers took advantage of three straight walks to start the bottom of the inning and take the lead for good.

Rhiana Lawrence, Faith Brenchley and Raegan Sudnikovich drew the free passes. Following an out, Gillian Jackman singled and Taya Sousa, Sydney Presher and Katelyn Klym all reached base as S-VE went ahead, 4-1.

Sousa drew a base on balls and scored in the third, then Christina Beebe and Hannah Martinez singled and scored in the fourth to push the lead to 7-1.

The Cardinals' Bri Beebe walked and scored in the seventh to close out the scoring.

Christina Beebe went 3-for-4 to lead Spencers' seven-hit attack. Brenchley, Sudnkovich, Martinez and Jackman had the other hits.

Both teams are back in action with Newark Valley (2-6) visiting Waverly (6-5) at 4:30 p.m. and S-VE (8-1) hosting Watkins Glen at 5 p.m.
