STAC SOFTBALL: OWEGO REBOUNDS WITH IMPRESSIVE WIN (2021-05-12)

Tioga County Sports Report
OWEGO — Lauren Gilbert struck out 12 batters and drove in three runs as Owego bounced back from a tough loss to defending Class D state champion Deposit / Hancock to defeat Oneonta, 8-1, in STAC softball action here Wednesday.

Indian coach Brent Doane said the win showed his team's resiliency.

“We are a young team, learning as we go," he said. "Each time we play, we get a little better and learn a lot!

Lauren Gilbert has really put the team on her back in the pitching department and offensively. She and Taylor Dalton are leading the way.”

Dalton is currently hitting at a .533 clip and Gilbert leads the team with a .643 batting average.

Owego wasted little time establishing its dominance, jumping out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning.

The Indians would tack on four more runs in the fourth to build a 7-0 cushion.

Each team would score a run in the sixth.

Gilbert's dozen Ks came over a five-inning stretch in which she scattered three hits. Dalton spelled her in the sixth, and gave up a run and walked two while fanning three batters.

Owego pounded out 11 hits which featured doubles by Gilbert, Dalton and Carly Kirtland.

Dalton went 3-for-4 with three runs and Gilbert was 2-for-3 with three RBI.

Aubel went 2-for-2 with a run, Kirtland and Emma Howe contributed a hit, run and RBI apiece, Brooklyn Gaurnier had a hit and a run, Jordan Greeno added a hit and RBI, and Sarah Terry and Macie Gibson added a hit and run, respectively.

“We have a tough road this week with games every day from Tuesday to Saturday," Doane said. "Tomorrow we face a very good Tioga team and then Forks. They are a fun group and I think they are up to the challenge.”

Tioga racked up 38 runs in two previous victories this week. The game begins at 5 p.m.
