IAC BASEBALL: NEWARK VALLEY SUFFERS ANOTHER HEARTBREAKER (2021-05-10)

Tioga County Sports Report
NEWARK VALLEY — The only thing standing between Newark Valley's Mikey Wandell and a stellar season is run support.

The Cardinal junior was brilliant on the mound for a second straight start here Monday. Unfortunately, NV could only muster two hits in a 10-inning, 1-0 loss to IAC Division 2 leader Trumansburg.

Wandell struck out 19 batters over nine innings as the Blue Raiders managed just four base runners. Ethan Fulton walked in the first and Lucas Taves walked in the ninth. In the fifth, Glen Addicott reached on a dropped third strike and Jamie Schappi delivered T-burg's lone hit. Fulton and Addicott were left stranded at third base.

The Raiders would put two men on in the 10th via walks with Tanner Potter advancing to third on a passed ball and scoring on Schappi's ground out to second.

The Cardinals left four runners in scoring position. Brenton Rosenberg reached on an error and moved to second on a passed ball in the first, Luke Rinkavage singled and stole second in the fifth, Dawson Moncalieri reached on an error and went to second on a passed ball in the seventh, and Wandell singled and advanced to second on a ground out in the ninth.

Fulton picked up the win in relief, fanning seven in three innings, including the final five batters. Taves posted nine strikeouts.

Jake Armstrong took the loss.

Newark Valley (0-3) hosts Edison (0-1) Tuesday.
