SPENCER — Spencer-Van Etten scored early and often, then overcame a seventh inning lapse to defeat Trumansburg, 17-7, in IAC crossover action here Thursday.

"It's a win," coach Ron Miller said. "I'm not happy about some of the things we did. They have to learn how to win and stay focused for the whole game."

Rhiana Lawrence had two hits, including a home run, and also had two runs and two RBI in the first inning as the Panthers jumped out to an 8-0 advantage. Faith Brenchley, Christina Beebe, Gillian Jackman, Sydney Presher, Taya Sousa and Katelyn Klym added a run apiece.

Hannah Martinez added a run in the second to make it 9-0.

T-burg would get three runs back in the top of the third, but Brenchley and Raegan Sudnikovich scored in the bottom of the inning for an 11-3 advantage.

Lawrence and Sudnikovich scored to make it 13-3 in the fourth.

The Blue Raiders would pick up a run in the fifth, but S-VE countered with four in their half of the inning, including a two-run home run by Sudnikovich. Sousa, Klym and Lawrence accounted for the other runs.

With a 17-4 cushion under their belts, the Panthers had a slight defensive lapse in the final inning, giving up a trio of runs on a pair of fielder's choices which failed to get any outs, and two outfield errors.

"It's always better to win than lose, that's for sure, but I was a little mad about the end of the game, that last inning," Miller said. "Two routine fly balls and then two outs coming back to the pitcher. Throw to first, get the out.

"We still have a lot to do on the mental aspect of the game, because we are young. We've only got two seniors on the team and only one of them starts."

Sudnikovich was a single short of hitting for the cycle, and scored three runs and drove in five more; Lawrence contributed two hits, four runs, two RBI, two walks and two steals; and Klym had a triple and a single, two runs and two RBI.

"We had a couple good hits," Miller said. "Raegan rocked that one. Rhiana had a nice shot and my 8th-grader hit that triple, Katelyn."

Taya Sousa tacked on two singles and two runs; Brenchley chipped in with three walks, two runs and two stolen bases; Beebe had a single, run and two RBI; Martinez had two walks, a run and an RBI; and Gillian Jackman and Sydney Presher added one run each.

S-VE (2-0) heads to Watkins Glen (0-2) Friday.
