IAC SOFTBALL: DEFENDING STATE CHAMPION EDISON TOO MUCH FOR NEWARK VALLEY (2021-05-04)
Tioga County Sports Report
NEWARK VALLEY — Allie Wandell was the only Newark Valley hitter to get the better of Edison pitcher Gabby Milazzo as the defending New York state Class C champions dominated the Cardinals, 24-1, in six innings here Monday.
NV's senior shortstop went 2-for-3 with a double, run and stolen base to spoil Milazzo's no-hit bid. Wandell's double and run came in the bottom of the first inning.
The Spartans took advantage of 16 hits and 16 walks on the way to winning their season opener. They led, 3-1, after an inning, then scored three more in the second. They added five runs in the third, another in the fourth, and tacked on a dozen runs in the sixth.
Mallory Mowchan, Payton Littlefield and Rachel Moffe collected three hits apiece for Edison. Maliyah McIver, Leah Austin-Whitaker and Maggs contributed two hits each. Bailey Mawhir added the other hit.
Milazzo struck out nine and didn't issue a walk. She gave up a single and stolen base to Wandell in the sixth. The Cardinals' only other base runner was Bri Beebe, who reached on an error in the second.
Newark Valley (0-2) visits Elmira Notre Dame (1-0) Wednesday at 5 p.m.
