SECTION IV FIELD HOCKEY: OWEGO SCORES EARLY, PULLS AWAY FROM SVEC (2021-04-16)

OWEGO — Owego scored two goals in the first 11 minutes and rode that cushion to a 4-0 Section IV Division 3 field hockey victory over SVEC here on a chilly and rainy Friday night.

Officially, the Eagles were the home team, but Indians clearly had the home field advantage.

"We clicked early on and they played as a team tonight, so that was really great," said Owego coach Ashlee Marsh.

"I would say tonight was definitely a team effort. Their passing, they was passing to each other. Everybody was where they should be, and just the hustle, overall, is what we've been looking for all season, and they just seemed to put it all together tonight."

"We played really hard on Monday when we played Vestal and were hoping to bring that same intensity tonight, but we really just couldn't get ourselves to that next level," SVEC coach Abby Gentile said.

Vestal, the defending Section IV Class B champion, won that game, 2-0.

"Everything seemed to be super straight instead of working the SIs (side-ins) and trying to get triangles going with their passing," Gentile added. "We just couldn't be in the right place at the right time, it felt like tonight. It was a little bit tough to get shots off in that case, but we did have some nice individual efforts tonight. They worked hard."

"It's unfortunate, but it was a fun season none the less.

Jordan Greeno would score the first of her two goals putting an unassisted shot in the back of the cage at 11:56 of the first quarter.

Almost eight minutes later, she would assist Cheyenne Rummel, increasing the lead to 2-0 with 4:04 on the clock.

The second quarter was a more evenly-played period and the teams would head into the break with the score still 2-0.

That wouldn't last long when the second half started as Greeno added another goal just 35 seconds into the third quarter.

Owego picked up its final goal on a penalty corner by Lauren Gilbert with 8:37 remaining in the final stanza. It came on the fourth of four corners during a three-minute span.

The Indians took five shots to SVEC's two and held a 12-2 advantage in corners.

Mya Lunn made two saves for Owego while Bella Young had two and Gabbie Evans one for the Eagles, who finished the season with a 3-6 record.

Owego (5-3) hosts Tioga Saturday at 1 p.m.
