NEWARK VALLEY — The Newark Valley girls soccer seniors went out with a bang Friday, accounting for all the goals in a 7-0 rout of Moravia here.

The seniors received strong support from their other teammates to end the season on a positive note.

"It was a nice way to finish with so many seniors, having eight seniors on the team, being able to finish up on a winning note like that," NV coach Chuck Schneider said. "I thought they did a pretty nice job of passing and hitting combinations. You could just see them, the enthusiasm, realizing it was their last game.

In their final high school game, Mackenna Nechwedowich and Leah Williams registered hat tricks, and Bri Beebe added a goal while classmate Kelsey Kerns contributed two assists. The rain and chill in the air seemed to have little effect on NV's ability to move the ball around.

"It's nice to have two seniors with hat tricks. They had a lot of nice shooting, Mackenna from a distance, who hit a couple from 30, 35 yards out, and Leah did a nice job of finding her way through the defense and finding those goals."

Nechwedowich scored the game's first goal at 33:49 after Williams deflected a shot off a Blue Devil defender right to Nechwedowich. She drilled a low line drive into the left corner of the goal for what would prove to be the game winner.

The Cardinals made it 2-0 at 24:18 when Beebe received a pass from Williams, took a few dribbles and ricocheted the ball off the left post.

Less than a minute later, Williams would put one in the back of the net to give a 3-0 advantage.

Nechwedowich's second goal, also from beyond 30 yards, came with 20:01 on the clock.

Meanwhile, Moravia struggled to possess the ball in the Newark Valley end, getting just three shots off in the first half.

The second half started out slow, but with 28:19 on the clock, Nechwedowich completed the that trick. Her low line drive tailed off to the left and joist past the Devils' keeper to give the Cardinals a 5-0 cushion.

Williams picked up her second goal of the day on a corner kick from Nechwedowich with 25:05 to go.

The final tally of the day came with 7:06 to play as Williams ripped a ground ball into the right side of the goal, giving her a hat trick.

Kerns chalked up her assists on two of Williams' goals, and Williams and Nechwedowich contributed one assist apiece.

Newark Valley will graduate eight seniors off its 20-player roster. In addition to Beebe, Kerns, Nechwedowich and Williams, the Cardinals will also say goodbye to Maris Aylesworth, Megan Felicetti, Ashley Holt and Leeanne Yammine.
