SECTION IV FOOTBALL: SVEC CRANKS OUT 70 POINTS IN ROUT OF T-BURG (2021-04-09)

Tioga County Sports Report
SPENCER — Reminiscent of the greased pig at an old-time county fair, Hunter Haynes dodged and darted his way through the Trumansburg defense for 207 yards, helping SVEC to a 70-34 victory in 8-man football here Friday night.

Devin Beach's performance was nothing to squeal about either as the tight end accounted for five of the Eagles' touchdowns.

In fact, six different Eagles took touches behind an offensive line which opened some big holes throughout the evening and four found their way into the end zone as SVEC rolled up 517 yards and scored nine TDs.

"It's nice to spread it around and give everybody a piece of the pie," SVEC coach Mike Chaffee said. "Those guys feed off each other. They block for each other. They run hard. They play hard together.

"They really played well as a group. From offensive line to running backs, quarterback, receivers, they all played well together."

Haynes carried the rock just 12 times and his final two carries resulted in long TD runs. SVEC was already sitting on a 40-12 cushion when Haynes scored his first TD of the night.

With a little over seven minutes remaining in the second quarter, a key pass break-up by Ousmane Duncanson and bad snap forced the Blue Raiders to turn the ball over at their own 37. Haynes took it to the house on the next play and Beach's PAT run made it 48-12 with 6:50 to go in the half.

Following an 80-yard Nick Thomas-to-Beach scoring strike on the Eagles' next series, Haynes weaved his way through the T-burg defense for a 56-yard scoring jaunt with 56 ticks left in the half, and his PAT run made it 62-18 at the break. It would be his final — and arguably most impressive — run of the night. That score was set up by Jacek Teribury's second of two interceptions.

While Haynes dominated the area between the goal lines, Beach owned the end zones. His first TD came on a 5-yard run about five minutes into the first quarter, three plays after Tyler Knickerbocker pounced on a T-burg fumble caused when Thomas hit the Raiders' Aden Alexander. Teribury tacked on the PAT run for a16-0 lead.

Alexander would return the ensuing kickoff for a TD, then Beach's next score, a 7-yard toss from Thomas, came 48 seconds into the second period, capped a 16-play, 68-yard drive. The PAT run by Thomas made it 24-6.

Teribury's first pick of the game set up TD No. 3 for Beach, who scored on a 15-yard run with 9:58 left in the second quarter. Thomas threw to Haynes for the PAT and a 32-6 lead.

Just over a minute later, Raider QB Ethan Fulton found Zach Voorheis open for a 51-yard TD to make it 32-12.

Up next was Beach TD No. 4, a 17-yard run, which was set up by a 70-yard kickoff return by Thomas. Teribury's PAT run made it 40-12 with 8:33 on the clock.

After Haynes' 37-yard TD jaunt and Alexander's 8-yard scoring run by made the score 48-18, Thomas and Beach hooked up on an 80-yard bomb with Beach snagging the aerial at the T-burg 40 and juking a defender en route to paydirt for TD No. 5 and a 54-18 bulge.

SVEC's first TD of the night took just five plays and covered 67 yards. Thomas scored on a 1-yard keeper at 10:52 and Haynes made it 8-0 with the PAT run.

The Raiders would chew up nearly half of the third-period clock with Alexander scoring on a 7-yard run and adding a PAT catch to make it 62-26.

On the ensuing drive, Duncanson broke free on a 42-yard dash. Teribury's PAT ru n pushed the lead to 70-26 with 3:06 left in the third quarter.

Trumansburg made it a 70-34 final with Fulton's 56-yard pass to Alexander and the duo's PAT hook-up.

The Eagles cranked out 517 yards offense, 430 coming on the ground from Haynes (12-207), Beach (8-64), Duncanson (3-56), Teribury (12-54), Cesar Figeroa (6-30) and Thomas (6-19).

Thomas also completed half of his four pass attempts for 87 yards and two TDs, both going to Beach.

Chaffee is thrilled to have so many big-play threats on his roster.

"As a coach, it's great," he said. "We can call on any anybody on the field at any different time, and you know you're going to get a good outcome with those guys out there. It makes our jobs a lot easier."

The Raiders (2-2) finished with 293 yards with Alexander having three receptions for 86 yards and four rushes for 33 more. Bryce Grove carried the pigskin 13 times for 86 yards. Fulton went 4-for-10 for 137 yards with two TDs and two interceptions, and added 40 yards rushing.

SVEC (3-0) will host a rematch with Newfield Tuesday at Candor at 7 p.m.

The Eagles won their previous meeting April 3, 50-36, with a roster of 14, mainly due to COVID-19 protocols that sidelined eight players. Chaffee is glad to have them back.

"It was nice to have guys back on the sideline," he said. "It was nice to get those guys in, get them all some reps so we can develop everybody and keep building our program, and get everybody back on the same page again. It felt real good to have those guys back. We're still missing one or two guys."
