CANDOR — Newark Valley built a comfortable cushion early and cruised to its sixth straight victory, defeating Candor, 45-32, in IAC action here Tuesday evening.

The Cardinals opened the game with a 16-point run before Kadrianna Foster put Candor on the board with 1:16 left in the period.

Cha Gardner scored six points in the first quarter, and Hannah Ferguson and Mackenna Nechwedowich tacked on five apiece to give NV a 20-4 advantage.

The Cardinals pushed their lead to 31-12 at the half as Gardner and Nechwedowich added four points each, and Bri Beebe knocked down a 3-pointer in Q2.

Nechwedowich put up five more points in the third period while Foster notched a pair of baskets for the Indians.

Candor's Braelyn Hornick and Cassie Doane put in four points apiece to highlight the fourth-quarter scoring.

Nechwedowich led all scorers with 16 points, and also had four rebounds and three blocks. Cha Gardner tallied 15 points, eight boards, three steals, two assists and a block, Bri Beebe had five points, Ferguson had five points and four assists, Allie Wandell added two points, three assists and three steals, Taylor Benjamin had two points and two steals, and Hayley Beebe added four steals.

Hornick paced Candor with 10 points and seven rebounds. Foster and Doane contributed eight points and five rebounds each, Shelby Swartz had two points and 12 rebounds, Pearl Ricardo had two points and three steals and Kara Morse added two points and four boards.

NV (8-1) hosts Candor (3-5) Thursday.
