SECTION IV BOYS SWIMMING: OWEGO PLACES 4th AT CLASS B MEET (2021-02-28)

OWEGO — Owego placed fourth overall at the virtual Section IV Class B Boys Swimming and Diving Championships here Friday evening, breaking 19 out of 20 seed times in the process.

The Indians scored 197 points, missing out on a top-three finish by one point. Owego did not have an entry in the diving competition. The third-place team, Johnson City, had two divers who accumulated 19 of the team's 198 points.

Powerhouses Maine-Endwell and Chenango Valley ran away with the top two spots in the eight-team meet. M-E scored 618 points and the Warriors had 514.

Owego posted 15 scoring finishes, including three thirds, a fifth and five other top-eight showings.

The Indians' quartet of Adam Gault, Tyler Krom, Gabe Snyder and Eric Theal placed third in both the 200-yard freestyle relay and the 400 free relay, registering times of 1:39.05 and 3:40.98, respectively.

Gault also placed third in the individual 200 free with a time of 1:55.18.

Christian Hodges, swimming solo in the Owego pool, finished fifth in the 500 free, clocking 5:53.49.

Coming away with seventh-place showings were Snyder in the 50 free (24.43 seconds) and 100 free (55.2 seconds), Theal in the 200 individual medley (2:17.31), and Gault in the 100 butterfly (1:02.03).

Jacob Krassin, Kyle Riegel, Christian Hodges and Dominick Mahonski took eighth in the 200 medley relay (2:12.46).

Theal placed 10th in the 100 butterfly (1:04.2) while Krom was 11th in the 200 free (2:14.6) and 12th in the 100 backstroke (1:12.09).

Riegel took 15th in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.64) and the 100 fly (1:13.72), and Krassin was 15th in the 100 back (1:20.31).

"It was impressive. A lot of time drops — and big ones. I'm really proud of them," coach Kyle Lounsbury said after the meet.

"I think we swam great," Theal added at the end of the meet. "We put the effort in and we all did a really good job today."

This was the final high school meet for Theal, the Indians' lone senior.
