IAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: S-VE UNABLE TO OVERCOME SLOW START (2021-02-27)

SPENCER — Spencer-Van Etten was unable to overcome a slow start, falling to Edison, 49-44, in IAC action here Saturday.
Bolstered by five 3-pointers, the Spartans built a 29-13 halftime advantage.
The Panthers would regroup at the break and outscore their guests, 17-8 to cut the lead to 37-30 heading into the final eight minutes. Sophia Dutra paced the rally with five points while Abigail Bunce and Adriana Newman added two baskets apiece.
Bunce, Dutra and Hannah Martinez scored four points apiece in the final frame, but Edison connected on seven of 10 free throws to turn S-VE away.
Dutra recorded a double-double, scoring 16 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. She also had four steals and three assists. Bunce chipped in with 14 points, five boards and a blocked shot, Martinez had six points, six boards and two assists, Newman contributed four points, seven boards, three assists and two steals, and Rhiana Lawrence added four points, four rebounds, four steals and three assists.
Edison (4-3) was led by Payton Littlefield with 14 points. Lexi Moore added 13 and Gabby Milazzo had 10.
The Panthers (1-3) head to Odessa-Montour (1-6) Monday.
