IAC BOYS BASKETBALL: OWEGO PULLS AWAY FROM CANDOR (2021-02-27)

OWEGO — After surviving a scare from Candor earlier in the week, Owego created some space early in the rematch and pulled away for a 62-42 IAC victory here Saturday.

Leading by five, Owego outscored the visitors, 16-7, to take a 31-17 advantage into intermission.

Tyler Hurlburt and Drew Tavelli knocked down one 3-pointer apiece, and Mason Rieg hit a trio of free throws in the period, offsetting five points by Candor's Will Zimmer and a trey from Joel Dougherty.

John Bangel scored seven points in the third quarter and Nick Wasyln dumped in five as Owego upped its lead to 47-30 heading into the final stanza. Zack Watson had five points for Candor.

Owego went 9-for-12 at the free throw line in the fourth quarter to ice the win. John Bangel made all four foul shots, Joe Bangel went 3-for-4 and Wasyln hit both of his attempts.

John Bangel led all scorers with 17 points and went 7-for-8 at the charity stripe. Joe Bangel went 6-for-8 at the line and finished with a dozen points. Wasyln contributed nine points, Rieg, who made all five free throws, and Hurlburt added seven apiece, Ryan Pryor and Tavelli scored three each, and Brad Palmer and Kaden Wheeland notched a basket apiece. Owego hit 21 of its 28 free throw attempts.

Thomas, Watson and Zimmer scored eight points each for Candor. Dougherty tallied six points, Cooper Thayer had four, and Hunter Bates and Seth McBride added three apiece. Candor connected for eight 3-pointers.

Owego (6-0) heads to Newark Valley (0-5) Monday and Candor (2-6) visits the Cardinals Tuesday.
