IAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: FIVE HIT DOUBLE DIGITS IN NEWARK VALLEY WIN OVER TIOGA (2120-02-25)

NEWARK VALLEY — Already stacked with talent, Newark Valley welcomed another player back from the injury list Thursday evening.

Gracie Gardner didn't take long to make her presence felt, joining four other teammates in double figures as the Cardinals rolled past Tioga, 87-37, here.

NV grabbed a 21-13 lead after a quarter and built a 44-25 cushion by halftime. Gracie Gardner scored nine of her 11 points in the first two periods.

Hannah Ferguson pumped out 10 points in the first half for the Cardinals, who also received nine points from Cha Gardner and seven more from Mackenna Nechwedowich.

Ferguson and Allie Wandell knocked down one 3-pointer apiece in the first quarter. NV also made nine of 12 free throws in the opening period.

The Tigers countered with two treys from Eve Wood and seven points from Ari Manwaring in the first frame. Wood tacked on two more threes in the second quarter.

Newark Valley put the game on ice in the third period, riding a 19-4 run to a 63-29 advantage. Bri Beebe, Ferguson and Wandell dumped in five points apiece to highlight the surge.

Olivia Ayres and Julia Bellis notched one three apiece in the fourth quarter to give Tioga seven treys on the evening.

Cha Gardner added seven more points to her total, giving her 14 for the game and a double-double. She pulled down 14 rebounds, and added five steals, three assists and one blocked shot.

Wood paced Tioga with a dozen points. Manwaring chipped in with seven, Bellis scored five, Mariah Nichols and Austyn Vance contributed four apiece, Ayers had three and Reese Howey scored two.

Ferguson led all scorers with 17 points, and had seven boards, three steals and two assists. Bri Beebe chalked up 14 points as well, and added a pair of thefts. Wandell scored a dozen points to go with three assists and three boards. Gracie Gardner contributed 11 points, three assists, three rebounds, three steals and two blocks.

Nechwedowich pitched in with nine points, eight rebounds, five assists, five blocks and three steals. Allie Walker had four points, and Hayley Beebe, Cymbri Jefferson and Rachel Walker pitched in with two points each. Hayley Beebe also had three steals and a block, Rachel Walker added two assists and Jefferson had a block.

Tioga (1-5) hosts NV (5-1) Saturday.
