IAC BOYS BASKETBALL: OWEGO RALLIES PAST CANDOR (2021-02-25)

CANDOR — Owego held Candor to four third-quarter points to rally to a 53-50 IAC victory here Thursday evening.

The visitors were able to survive a 25point effort by Candor's Nick Thomas in the process.

Thomas scored Candor's only points in the third period. Owego, meanwhile, picked up six points from Brad Palmer, and four each from Drew Tavelli and Nick Wasyln to turn an eight-point halftime deficit into a 43-39 lead heading into the final stanza.

John Bangel picked up six points in the fourth quarter, including a 3-pointer, and Wasyln added a trey to offset eight more points by Thomas.

The two teams battled to a 17-17 draw through the game's first eight minutes. Thomas connected for eight points in the opening frame, Will Zimmer had four, Zack Watson drained a trey and Hunter Haynes had a basket. Owego received five points from Palmer, four apiece from John Bangel and Mason Rieg, and two each from Joe Bangel and Tyler Hurlburt.

Thomas scored five in the second quarter, Haynes had four Joel Dougherty added three, and Bryce Mills and Watson knocked down one trey each to grab a 35-27 lead at the break. Hurlburt and Joe Bangel notched four points each, and John Bangel had the other two.

John Bangel led Owego with 12 points and Palmer contributed 11 more. Joe Bangel scored eight, Wasyln had seven, Hurlburt chipped in with six, Rieg and Tavelli had four apiece, and Ryan Pryor added a point.

Haynes and Watson split a dozen points evenly, Dougherty pitched in with four, Mills added three and Watson scored two.

Candor (2-5) heads to Owego (5-0) Saturday at 11 a.m.
