IAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: OWEGO RIDES FAST START TO VICTORY OVER CANDOR (2021-02-25)

Tioga County Sports Report
OWEGO — Maddie Bennett knocked down four 3-pointers and Evee Coleman added 10 points as a quick start led Owego to a 62-23 IAC victory over Candor Thursday evening.

Bennett's 12 points highlighted a 22-8 first-period start for the Indians while Coleman connected for four baskets and a pair of free throws.

Coleman added two more buckets in the second quarter, and Maggie McCann and Ellie Sherwood drained one three each to build the Owego advantage to 33-14 at the half.

Braelyn Hornick, who led Candor with a dozen points, scored nine in the first half.

Coleman scored six more points in the third period as the Owego cushion expanded to 44-18.

"We were outmatched by a bigger school, but the girls gave 100 percent," Candor coach Carl Kanoff said. "We only had a rotation of seven tonight with a few guards out with illness and injury, so we were pretty tired by the fourth quarter and didn't handle their man-to-man defense very well."

Candor doesn't have a JV team, so some of the Owego JV players were called up for the game. One was Madison McEvoy, who contributed a trey and a basket in the fourth quarter. McCann had a three and a bucket as well.

Coleman would record a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds. She also had four steals and three blocks. Bennett ended up with 15 points on the night, all on treys, and added five boards and three assists.

McCann contributed eight points and four steals, McEvoy and Sherwood scored five apiece, Lauren Gilbert chipped in with four points, Maggie Huizinga and JV call-up Taylor Dalton adde two points each, and Georgann Hankey had one point and five boards.

Hornick added eight rebounds to her stats and Cassie Doane had eight boards to go with four points. Kara Morse contributed seven rebounds, two points and two blocks, Cadriana Edwards pitched in with four points and four rebounds, Pearl Ricardo had one point, four rebounds and three steals, Addie Aman had five steals and Shelby Swartz had six boards.

Owego (4-3) visits Candor (2-4) Saturday at 1 p.m.
