IAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: S-VE OPENS SEASON WITH WIN OVER O-M (2021-02-16)

SPENCER — Spencer-Van Etten held Odessa-Montour to single free throw points in the first and fourth quarters en route to a 41-30 IAC victory in the Panthers' season opener Monday.

Hannah Martinez and Sophia Dutra, two of S-VE's top returning players, scored 19 and 12 points respectively, to lead the way, and Dutra recorded a double-double, pulling down 14 rebounds.

Meanwhile the defense held the Indians' top scorer, Autumn Garrison, in check. She came in averaging 15 points per game and scored five.

Martinez accounted for all the Panthers' points as they grabbed an 8-1 first-quarter lead. Two of her baskets came from 3-point range.

O-M cut the gap to 16-12 at the half as Mackenzie Cannon notched a trey and two free throws, and Hannah Nolan added four points.

Martinez tacked on another trey for S-VE in the second quarter, Ashleigh Morais had three points and Abigail Bunce added a basket.

Cannon knocked down two more treys and Nolan contributed four more points in the third period, but S-VE picked up two threes from Martinez and one apiece from Dutra and Adriana Newman to inch the advantage to 34-29 heading into the fourth quarter. Martinez had eight points and Dutra scored seven in the period.

Dutra put up a trey and two free throws, and Rhiana Lawrence made two free throws in the fourth quarter.

Morais and Newman contributed three points each to the S-VE scorebook while Bunce and Newman added two apiece. Bunce also had eight boards, Martinez grabbed five steals and Lawrence doled out five assists.

The Panthers visit O-M (0-3) Thursday.
