YOUTH BASEBALL (14U): FINGER LAKES FALCONS GO 2-1 AT BSE CHAMPIONS FIREWORK EXPLOSION (2020-07-09)
Tioga County Sports ReportPOTTSTOWN, Pa. — The Elmira Heights-based Finger
Lakes Falcons 14U travel baseball team, which features a trio of local
players — Waverly’s Jay Pipher and Ty Beeman, and S-VE’s Kam Smith —
went 2-1 over the holiday weekend at the BSE Champions Fireworks
Explosion.
The Falcons won both of their pool play games to earn
the fifth-seed heading into Sunday’s bracket play. They were eliminated
by the fourth-seeded Maryland Blue Chips, based in Bel Air, Md., in the
opening round.
POOL PLAY
Falcons 7, Berks Bulls 5The
Falcons scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning to break a
4-4 tie, and held on for a 7-5 four-inning win over the Berks County
(Pa.)-based Berks Bulls in the opening game of pool play Friday evening.
Pipher
delivered a two-RBI single to cap the second-inning rally for the
Falcons. He was 1-for-2 with a run scored, two RBI, and two stolen bases
in the win.
Beeman was 0-for-1 with a walk, and Smith entered as a defensive replacement.
Falcons 11, Pa. Shockers 0Pipher
pitched two strong innings and had two hits to lead the Falcons to an
11-0 win over the Quakertown (Pa.)-based Pa. Shockers in the final game
of pool play Saturday morning.
Pipher allowed two hits, while
striking out four and walking two in two innings of work. He worked out
of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the bottom of the first inning to
preserve a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the third inning, Pipher laced
an RBI single, and Beeman drew a bases-loaded walk to push the Falcons’
lead to 5-0. Pipher scored the final run of the rally to make it 7-0.
Pipher also added an RBI single in the Falcons’ four-run fifth-inning rally.
Pipher
was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, two RBI, and two stolen bases in the
win, while Beeman was 0-for-2 with a walk, and an RBI, and Smith was
0-for-1 with a walk.

Quarterfinals
Maryland Blue Chips 10, Falcons 7The
Falcons jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the second inning, but
Maryland BC rallied with six runs in the home half of the inning en
route to a 10-7 win in the opening round of bracket play Sunday morning.
Beeman was 0-for-3 with a run scored, and Pipher was 0-for-3 for the Falcons.
Pipher
was tagged with the loss on the mound. He allowed five runs — four
earned — on four hits and four walks in 1 2/3 innings of work.
Maryland
BC lost 6-0 in the semifinals to the top-seeded Francisco Notorious 9
(Farmingdale, N.Y.), which beat the Telford (Pa.)-based Indian Valley
Storm, 17-0, in the championship game.
JUNE 28The Falcons opened their season June 28 with a pair of wins over the Cortland Crush.
Falcons 14, Crush 3The Falcons scored five runs in the top of the fourth to blow open a close game en route to a 14-3 win.
Pipher
doubled and singled, scored one run, drove in two runs, and stole two
bases, while Beeman singled twice, scored one run, knocked in one run,
and stole one base, and Smith singled in two at-bats, and scored two
runs.
Smith also pitched a hitless inning of relief, striking out three and walking two.
Falcons 12, Crush 1The Falcons scored four runs in each of the third and fourth innings to roll to a 12-1 win over the Crush.
Kam
Smith doubled, scored one run, and drove in two runs in the Falcons’
six-hit attack, while Pipher scored a run and drove in a run, and Beeman
collected two RBI.
Pipher pitched two innings of hitless ball,
allowing an unearned run on three walks, while striking out three.
Beeman pitched an inning of hitless relief, striking out three and
walking one.
