TAYLOR MADE: A FINAL LOOK AT 2019-20 STANDOUTS (2020-06-27)

As the 2019-20 school year comes to a close, Tioga County can look back on the numerous successes attained by our high school athletes — despite the fact a promising spring season was wiped out by the coronavirus pandemic.

FALL
The start of the 2019-20 campaign brought a state championship to Candor on the volleyball court. The Indians moved past Bainbridge-Guilford and into a tie with Owego atop the Section IV leaderboard with three titles apiece.

The fall also produced another Section IV championship for the Tioga football team (its 8th in the past 9 years). The Tigers rank fourth in Section IV titles with 11 (including the bowl era).

Owego won its third consecutive Section IV title in boys cross country and Waverly's Sheridan Talada captured a medal at the state cross country meet.

Newark Valley field hockey battled its way to a Section IV runner-up showing.

Owego's Emma Stephenson won the 200-yard freestyle and the 500 free, and Ashleigh Gault won the 100 backstroke at the Section IV championships. The duo teamed with Jennifer Scott and Katie Shoen to win the 200 medley relay and 200 free relay. Shoen was also a qualifier in the 50 free and 100 free.

WINTER
The winter season was impressive for the locals as well. Tioga wrestling repeated as the state team tournament champion, and captured titles at the Section IV tournament (four straight) and the Section IV dual meet tourney (three in a row).

Nine wrestlers from Newark Valley, Owego, Tioga and Waverly qualified for the state tourney with eight reaching the podium — including the Tigers' champion, Gianni Silvestri.
Tioga's Brady Worthing (2nd), Owego's Cam Bundy (3rd), the Tigers' Caden Bellis and Waverly's Ethan Stotler (4th), Newark Valley's Josh Post (5th), and Tioga's Emmett Wood (7th) and Mason Welch (8th) were place-winners as well.

Waverly's Isaac Chandler snagged a bronze medal in the pole vault at the indoor track & field state championships.

Wolverine swimmer Mike Atanasoff placed fifth at states in the 50-yard freestyle and 11th in the 100 free. Teammate Gage Streeter was a state qualifier in diving.
The Newark Valley girls basketball team made quite the impression on the hardwoods, winning their first 22 games en route to a Section IV runner-up finish, while the NV cheer squad also finished second in Section IV.

SPRING
Unfortunately, athletes and teams were unable to display their talents when COVID-19 forced the cancellation of spring sports. That cheated Owego boys lacrosse out of a possible encore after winning its first Section IV championship last spring. Also hoping to repeat as sectional champs were the Tioga baseball and Waverly softball teams, and the Tioga boys and Waverly girls golf teams, the latter of which holds a state-best 118-match win streak.

Individually, Chandler and teammates Elizabeth Fritzen, Olivia Nittinger, Melina Ortiz, Cora Smith, Sheridan Talada, and Collin Wright, NV's Kayla Malarkey, Candor's Lance Jensen and Owego's Derek Sarrge were denied returns to state competition. Also looking to go back to states was Tioga golfer Sam Taylor, who qualified in 2016, 2017 and 2018.
