COLLEGE FIELD HOCKEY: NEWARK VALLEY'S BERGHORN, HOFFMIER TO TEAM UP AT NAZARETH (2020-04-08)

NEWARK VALLEY — With each passing day, Covid-19 continues to steal the headlines which are usually reserved for more exciting news — like the accomplishments of the local high school athletes.

That includes numerous National Letter of Intent signings which have been postponed due to the NCAA's temporary recruitment blackout. However, that doesn't prevent the high school athletes from announcing their intentions to take their talents to the collegiate level.

Two Newark Valley field hockey standouts, Marissa Berghorn and Cassidy Hoffmier, who led the Cardinals to the Section IV Division 3 title and a berth in the Section IV Class C championship game this past fall, will team up again at Nazareth College in the fall.

Hoffmier was a defensive leader for NV, but scored five goals while handing out five assists during a 14-5 season. Berghorn knocked 19 balls into the back of the cage and dished out four assist. The Division 3 goals and points leader, she was tied for first in Section IV and was sixth in the state in goals scored (19), and was third in the section and 12th in the state in points (42).

While they're pursuing the same athletic path, the duo has selected different academic opportunities.

"I plan to major in Elementary Education," Hoffmier said. "I chose this major because I have always loved kids. When I was in fourth grade I read the book Matilda and fell in love with Miss Honey, and wanted to become a teacher just like her!"

"I plan on majoring in Biology for a Pre-Med track," said Berghorn. "I chose this major because I’ve always been interested in helping people, and I absolutely love medicine and how the human body works.

"I picked Nazareth because it felt like home as soon as I stepped on campus. It was beautiful and everyone was super nice and friendly."

Neither athlete has been able to sign their letter of intent, but both said they do plan on signing one.
