HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS BASKETBALL: BCANY NAMES NEWARK VALLEY'S SCHWEIGER COACH OF THE YEAR (2020-04-03)

TIOGA COUNTY — Newark Valley coach Greg Schweiger has been named the Section IV Class B Coach of the Year by the Basketball Coaches Association of New York.

Schweiger guided the Cardinals to a 22-1 record this season and their first IAC championship since 1991. NV went undefeated in the IAC South Large School division, then rolled to a lopsided victory over Whitney Point in the IAC Large School championship game.

Newark Valley would defeat perennial powerhouse Waverly in the Section IV Class B quarterfinals, then knock off second-seeded Owego in the semifinals, 42-39. NV took on defending champion Norwich in the title game, fading late in a 58-46 loss.

The Cardinals, who averaged more than 70 points per game while holding opponents well under 40, climbed as high as No. 4 in the state rankings, but slipped to No. 14 at season's end.

NV's Mackenna Nechwedowich was named to the first team and Hannah Ferguson's made the second team. All but three of Schweiger's roster return next season, and only one of the graduates was a starter.
