WAVERLY'S TOMASSO HEADS ALL-TIOGA COUNTY BOYS 'NEWCOMERS OF THE WINTER' (2020-03-24)

TIOGA COUNTY — Waverly's Joe Tomasso stepped into a key role as an 8th-grader and earned the 2019-20 All-Tioga County boys "Newcomer of the Winter" honor.

Tomasso averaged 6.5 points, 2.1 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 1.7 steals per game. He also canned 24 3-pointers as the Wolverines posted a 15-6 overall record.

Waverly would go 10-2 in the IAC South Large School division, tying Watkins Glen for the top record before dropping a one-game playoff with the Senecas, who went on to win the league championship.

Rounding out the Newcomer of the Winter list (in alphabetical order by school) are:

Joel Dougherty, Candor, basketball: The sophomore played in every game for the 13-8 Indians, averaging 6.0 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game.

Kodi Floyd, Candor, bowling: The 7th-grader carried: a 194 average with a high game of 248 and high series of 585 during the regular season. He placed second in Section IV Class D with a 259-687 to advance to the state qualifier.

Raidyn Ford, Newark Valley, basketball: One of six junior newcomers on the NV squad, he averaged close to 10 points per game and scored in double figures in five games. He notched a season-high 15 points in back-to-back games against Lansing and Dryden in January.

Cam Doane, Owego, basketball: The senior had to sit out his junior season after transferring from Candor in mid-school year. He came back to lead the Indians in rebounding with 7.2 boards per game and was the team's top interior defender. He also averaged four points per game.

Matt Gatto, Owego, wrestling: The sophomore opened the season by winning the Friends of Section IV JV tournament, then moved up to fill the 160-pound varsity slot and help the Indians repeat as STAC Metro champs. He went 21-14 overall and placed fourth in two tournaments.

Mason Rieg, Owego, basketball: With three senior veterans averaging double digits in scoring, the junior guard wasn't needed for as mush for his scoring as he was for his quickness and defense (the Indians allowed just 47.8 points per game). However, he did post a season-high 10 points in a 51-30 romp over Class AA Horseheads in the team's home opener.

Wyatt Stouffer, SVEC, wrestling: A freshman, he was 18-13 with 17 bonus-point wins. He placed third in the Section IV Division II qualifier, fifth at the Cazenovia Invitational, went 5-0 at the Odessa-Montour Dual Meet Tournament and 5-2 at the Central Valley Academy Dual Meet Tournament.

Levi Bellis, Tioga, wrestling: The eighth-grader went 16-12 with 13 bonus-point victories. He placed in five of the six tournaments he entered, which included two runner-up showings. Bellis would also go 2-0 at the Section IV Division Dual Meet Championships, notching a pin to spark the Tigers rallied to defeat Windsor, 40-34, in the title match.

Gage Cain, Tioga, bowling: A freshman, he helped the Tigers win the IAC Division 2 championship, carrying a 166 average with a 213 high game and 613 high series. He placed sixth at the league tournament and was part of the 4th-place Class D line-up, which was also seventh at the state qualifier.
