SECTION IV FOOTBALL: 2020 SCHEDULES ANNOUNCED (2020-03-15)

TIOGA COUNTY — Members of the Section IV Football Conference are seeing a major realignment in the for the 2020 season. The changes come as a result of the NYPHSAA Central Committee adjusting the classification numbers during the off-season.

The classifications are based on BEDS numbers (total enrollment — boys and girls in grades 9 through 11) — submitted to New York State by each school district.

NYSPHAA bumped the cut-off numbers up during the annual meeting last summer, creating an increase from 9 to 11 Class C programs next season in Section IV, and a jump from nine to 12 Class D programs, although two Class D programs have since switched to 8-man football. Meanwhile, Class B, drops from eight to three programs and will combine with the section's Class A teams for regular-season purposes only.

CLASS B
Owego will remain in Division II, along with Class B foes Maine-Endwell and Johnson City. The division will also include Class A Binghamton, Union-Endicott and Vestal. Owego opens the season at Vestal on Sept. 11.

CLASS C
Spencer-Van Etten / Candor, Waverly, Dryden, Watkins Glen / Odessa-Montour and Whitney Point will play in Division IV. SVEC and Waverly are expected to start the season Sept. 11, with the Eagles heading to Norwich and the Wolverines hosting Susquehanna Valley. SVEC and Waverly meet on the final weekend of the regular season, and the Wolverines visit Owego the previous week.

Division III will include Chenango Forks and Sus Valley, the defending state champions in Class B and C, respectively, as well as Chenango Valley, Norwich, Oneonta and Windsor.

CLASS D
Newark Valley moves to Class D and will face rival Tioga in Division VI, which also includes Bainbridge-Guilford, Groton and Harpursville. NV hosts the Tigers Oct. 17.

The other Class D division, Division V, will consist of Delhi, Deposit / Hancock, Sidney, Unatego / Franklin and Walton.

Greene and Moravia, Class D teams last year, have switched to 8-man.

Owego and SVEC open their seasons on the road the weekend of Sept. 11-12 with the Indians heading to Vestal on Friday night. The Eagles will visit Norwich, most likely on Friday.

Newark Valley, Tioga and Waverly begin the season at home. NV will host Walton, Tioga will face Delhi and Waverly entertains Sus Valley. The Cardinals do not have lights and play on Saturdays. Tioga and Waverly usually play home games on Friday evenings.
