JOHNSON CITY — Jayden Duncanson of Candor won the New York-USA Wrestling state championship held at Johnson City High School here Sunday. He competed in the 12U 86-pound division.

Duncanson opened the tournament with a 45-second fall over Jordan Andreula of Long Beach-USA. He followed that win with a 2-0 decision of Trevor DellaPenta from Eden Wrestling Club.

In the championship bout, Duncanson decisioned Chase Richards, who was wrestling unaffiliated.

Duncanson also defeated Richards, a former state champion, at the 2019 NYWAY State Championships, but prior to the finals had beaten Duncanson in two of their previous three meetings.

The 11-year-old Duncanson was coached in Sunday's tournament by Corky Armstrong, the Johnson City varsity coach. Armstrong also coached him in his first four years of wrestling.

This weekend, Duncanson will be among several Tioga County youth competing in the 2020 NYWAY State Championships at Brockport.
