Trentyn Rupert, a Newark Valley grad, placed fourth at 285 pounds last weekend at the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional Wrestling Championships, hosted by Ithaca College.
He suffered a 6-1 loss to RIT's Sam Weinger in the third-place bout to finish the season with an 8-3 record. He joined the team late in the season.
Rupert won both of his matches Saturday by fall. He pinned Tom Marretta of TCNJ in 4:54 after building a 10-0 cushion in his opening match. In his second match her decked Muhlenberg's Scott Schaeffer with 45 seconds left in the first period.
On Sunday, he faced top-seeded Keegan Connelly of Scranton in the semifinals, falling, 3-2. Connelly grabbed a 3-1 lead on a takedown with less than a minute left in the bout. Rupert scored an escape with 16 seconds to go, but was unable to score after that.
Rupert advanced to the third-place match with a 5-4 win over Marretta, taking a 4-3 lead on a takedown and near fall late in the second period, then scored the decisive point on riding time.
The Red Dragons'
Gianno Silba, also a Newark Valley grad, lost both of his matches at 165. He dropped an 18-5 major decision to John Garda of TCNJ, then dropped a 5-4 heartbreaker Brockport's Matthew Kline. Silba finished the year with a 25-14 record.
