NEW YORK STATE WRESTLING: NEWARK VALLEY'S POST ENDS HIGH SCHOOL CAREER WITH A 'W' (2020-02-29)

ALBANY — Only a small percentage of wrestlers end their high school careers with a victory. Newark Valley's Josh Post joined that group Saturday with a fifth-place finish at the NYSPHSAA Division II Wrestling Championships at the Times Union Center here Saturday.

The eighth-seeded Cardinal senior defeated No. 7 Mitchell Geiser of Alexander, 4-2, in overtime at 132 pounds to secure that honor.

"It wasn't our best match, but it was his last one and we came out on top," NV coach Mike Daly said.

Post would get in on Geiser's legs early and looked like he might score the early points. Geiser somehow fought it off and the period ended, 0-0.

A trade-off of a takedown and reversal left the score deadlocked at 2-2 heading into the third period.

Geiser, despite being called for stalling, would keep Post from scoring to force the OT. In the extra session he made the initial attack, but Post turned it in his favor for the winning points.

"It was hard-fought. He got after it. He made a mistake or two that kind of cost him there, but you keep plugging along. We knew that kid was a hammer on top."

The kid went at it. It was a counter. He didn't have much on his feet all match. He must have been saving it for that moment. That's where Josh wins matches, on his feet. Going into overtime, sure we wanted to get that escape, but overtime being neutral, we knew we could get it."
